For anything about a particular treatment, the page for that treatment has its own questions and answers. The examination page is a good place to start if you have not seen a dentist for a while.

Frequently Asked Questions at Carlton Dental, Downtown Toronto

Your questions

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes, we are, and you are welcome to book a first visit online or by phone. A first visit is usually an examination with x-rays where they are needed, and a cleaning if time allows.

Where are you, and how do I get there?

We are at 25 Carlton Street, Suite A, in downtown Toronto. College Station on Line 1 is the nearest subway stop, and the Carlton streetcar stops close by.

What are your hours?

We are open on weekdays, and into the evening on several of them. You can see the current hours for each day at the bottom of every page on this site.

What should I bring to a first appointment?

It helps to bring your dental insurance details if you have a plan, a list of any medications you take, and the name of your previous dentist if you would like us to transfer your records and x-rays.

Do you bill my insurance directly?

Yes. We send the claim to your insurer for you, and you pay only the part your plan does not cover. Our fees page explains how estimates work, so you know your share before we start.

Do you accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

Yes, we do. Please see our Canadian Dental Care Plan page for what to bring and what you may be asked to pay.

Can I be seen the same day for a toothache?

We are sorry you are hurting. Call as early in the day as you can. We offer same-day appointments for urgent problems, and our dental emergencies page explains what to do in the meantime.

Do you see children?

Yes, and children are welcome here. Our children's dentistry page describes first visits and check-ups for children.

How often should I have a check-up and cleaning?

Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease or frequent cavities, you may need to come more often, and we will tell you if that applies to you. See scaling and cleanings.

Why do I need x-rays?

It is a fair question. X-rays show decay between teeth, infection at the root and the level of the bone, none of which can be seen by looking. We take them only when they are needed, and we will always tell you why first.

I am nervous about the dentist. What can you do?

That is very common, and you are not alone. Please tell us when you book. We can allow more time, explain each step before we do it, and stop whenever you ask. Many people who have stayed away for years find the first visit easier than they expected.

Can I transfer my records from another dentist?

Yes. With your written consent we will ask your previous office to send your records and recent x-rays, which can save you repeating them.
