What to Expect
A root canal usually goes like this, and we will explain each step as we go.
- Your dentist freezes the area first. This keeps you comfortable the whole time. Then your dentist makes a small opening in your tooth. This lets them reach the middle of the tooth, where the infected nerve sits. The nerve is also called the dental pulp.
- Your dentist uses small tools to take out the infected pulp from the root canal. They clean and shape the canals. Then they disinfect the canals to kill any germs left behind. After that, they fill the canals with a safe material called gutta-percha. This seals the canal and stops a new infection.
- Most times, you will also need a dental crown. A crown is a cap that goes over your tooth. It makes the tooth strong again. It also helps the tooth work and look as it should.
You may need more visits. These let your dentist check that your tooth is healing well and that the root canal treatment worked.
How long does the recovery period last after root canal therapy?
Recovery after a root canal is usually short. You may feel some mild soreness or sensitivity in your tooth. This should go away within a few days to a week.
